8 Steps to a Healthy Beard
Beards can be such a good look, but they require a lot of upkeep if you want them to stay healthy and look put together! In this blog post, we'll be discussing 8 easy steps that will help take care of your beard and make it grow healthy and strong.
Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of resources out there for men to learn how to care for their beards - I didn't fully understand that until I started working in a barbershop and was so surprised by how little information there was out there about how men should care for their hair and beards. I also found that so many women/men had questions when they came in with their husbands or partners about how to help them take care of their beards.
So whether you're a bearded man yourself, or you have a bearded loved one, read on for our top tips on how to take care of your beard!
Step One: Shampoo
Start by washing your beard with a quality shampoo. This will help get rid of any dirt or debris that may be trapped in your beard hair. When I worked in a barbershop I was very surprised by the number of men who use body soap on their beards - please don't! Body soap can massively dry out your beard making it course and untamed. Investing in a quality shampoo will not only enhance your hair but will also make your beard much easier to maintain. It's important to wash your beard with high-quality shampoo just as often as you do the hair on top of your head to make sure dirt, oil, and dead skin cells don't build up over time which can irritate your skin. (*don't forget about the mustache! It's easy to forget about the hair on your upper lip, but be sure to keep it clean too.)
Step Two: Condition
Apply a conditioner to your beard, making sure to massage it into the hair and the skin underneath. Conditioner is important for keeping your beard healthy and soft. You can also use a leave-in conditioner instead of a regular conditioner. This will help you combat dryness throughout your day while also making it easier to style your beard and keep it hydrated all day long. (*make sure thoroughly rinse shampoo and conditioner to ensure there is no buildup leftover)
Step Three: Detangle
Use a comb or brush to style your beard how you want it. This will help train the hairs to grow in the right direction and keep them looking neat and tidy. A boar bristle brush is perfect for styling your beard and distributing oils evenly throughout its length. It also helps to stimulate hair growth by promoting blood circulation to the skin beneath your beard.
Step Four: Trim
Trim any stray hairs using clippers, scissors, or a trimmer. It's important to keep your beard trimmed if you don't want it to look too wild and unkempt. I would recommend using a beard trimmer to get the most even and precise trimming. If you don't want to have to trim your beard too often then make sure you're using a good quality boar bristle brush because it will help reduce the number of split ends you get. Split ends can lead to frizziness and an overall messy look, so it's best to nip them in the bud as soon as possible!
Step Five: Oil
Apply beard oil daily. Beard oils are essential for keeping your beard healthy and hydrated. They help to lock in moisture, combat dryness, and prevent flaking. Look for an oil that contains jojoba oil, argan oil, or coconut oil - these ingredients are known for their nourishing and moisturizing properties. Beard oil is essential for keeping your beard conditioned and shiny, as well as reducing beard itch. Simply apply a couple of drops of oil to your fingers before running them through your hair. Just like the hair on top of our heads, beards need hydration to keep them healthy and looking good!
Step Six: Exfoliate
Take care of your skin by exfoliating it regularly. The skin beneath your beard can often become dry, irritated, and covered in dead skin cells. Exfoliation will help remove all of this built-up gunk, allowing your skin to breathe properly and promoting hair growth. I would recommend using a gentle exfoliator that doesn't contain any harsh chemicals or sulfates.
Step Seven: Hydrate
Drink lots of water. This is important for overall good health, including keeping your beard looking its best. Water helps to flush out toxins from the body while nourishing our cells - including those in our hair follicles! Water is essential for keeping all aspects of our health in check, including our hair! Beards need hydration just like the rest of our skin, so make sure you're getting enough water each day.
Step Eight: Be Patient.
Growing a beard is not an overnight process, it takes time and patience – so don't get discouraged if it's taking a little longer than expected! Some men can grow a full beard in just a few weeks while others may take months; everyone is different so please be patient with the process. The key is to make sure you're following all of the steps above to achieve & maintain your desired look. And finally, remember to have fun with it! Experiment with styles, find what works best for you, and enjoy your new look!
Following these eight tips will help keep your beard healthy, smooth, and shaped! By taking care of your beard in the right way, you'll be able to maintain a well-groomed appearance that will make you look and feel great. So take some time to implement these tips into your daily routine, and watch as your beard transforms before your eyes!
